Hot coating is the application of a thick, final layer of resin and fast hardener over the lamination to provide an undoubtedly smooth surface, quickly. 💨
.
Because surfboard hot coats are sanded to achieve their final finish, they must be thick enough so as to not damage the underlying fiberglass in the lamination layer. A fill coating may be applied after a wet layup lamination to help fill the texture of the cloth, and to provide a smoother surface on which to hot coat. Fill coats are commonly applied when the lamination surface has gelled but is still tacky. This allows the fill coat to better adhere to the lamination surface and hold in place. 💪

CCR (Clear Casting Resin) and CCS (Clear Casting Slow hardener) will provide a clear, colorless cure at pours up to 1" deep. For castings deeper than 1", multiple layers can be poured to achieve your desired thickness.

"Heres a 6'1 Electric twin, needs no introduction, it's the board I recommend most for ripping small waves.
.
But the exciting thing about this board is its ONE of THREE (!) Ecoboard constructions I've been working on the last few years.
.
So this is my most long standing eco construction, and first to be approved by @sustainsurf Ecoboard project. Its a recyclable EPS core with SuperSap epoxy resin, light and flexy while actually using thicker fibreglass for strength and longevity.
.
The more recent Ecoboard options include @arctic_foam Biofoam (PU made from cashew nuts) and Polyola (recycled PU with wood pulp). These can both be used with polyester or epoxy SuperSap resin depending on your preference. But all three give you a great Ecoboard option whether you froth on EPS/Epoxy or PU/POLY.
.
Lastly, I believe we shouldn't be profiteering off more sustainable products, so while these come at a slightly higher cost, I'm keeping Ecoboard upgrades as achievable as possible by offering them at cost price. There's some good news!"

We created artwork for the Sea Exhibit that also enabled us to prototype an idea for gussets.

Like the golden "Font of Creation" an "You Are A Water Healer" (which are also on view at the Drawing Room Annex), we made these new pieces using Eureka MDF a zero formaldehyde medium density fiberboard created from post-harvest rice straw in the Sacramento Valley.
.
For these new pieces, in addition to Eureka MDF, we used reclaimed glass, LED lights, and - in our ongoing quest for more eco-friendly materials - Entropy 30% bio-based resin.
.
Entropy developed and manufactured the first epoxy product certified under the USDA Certified Biobased Product label program. Through green chemistry, sustainable raw materials, and efficient manufacturing they conserve energy, minimize harmful byproducts and reduce greenhouse gas emissions of their resins and hardeners.

How much resin and hardener do you need for your next project? 🤔 Easy! Let's talk about how to calculate coverage.

Coverage is measured in cubic inches. 📏 For reference, a mixed gallon of epoxy yields 231 cubic inches.

Let's say you're making a river table:

Doing a pour 8-inch-wide, 2″ deep, and 6′ long:

8″ x 2” x 72″ = 1152 cubic inches.

1152 / 231 = 4.98 gallons.
